Traditional Thai Massage vs. Swedish Massage: What's Actually Different?

Both get booked under "massage" on a spa menu, but traditional Thai massage and Swedish massage are built on almost opposite ideas of what a massage should feel like. Here's the real difference, so you book the one you actually want.

Two very different massage philosophies

Swedish massage, the style most people picture when they hear "massage," was developed in 19th-century Europe around long, gliding oil strokes intended to relax muscle and improve circulation. Traditional Thai massage comes from an entirely different tradition — over 2,500 years old, combining principles from Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, and Buddhist mindfulness into a full-body practice worked along the body's energy lines, not just its muscles.

Neither is "better" in the abstract. They're solving for different things, and knowing the difference is the whole point of booking the right one.

The technique: acupressure and assisted stretching vs. long gliding strokes

A Swedish massage is done with oil, with the client lying still throughout, while the therapist works the muscles with kneading and gliding strokes. A traditional Thai massage is usually done fully clothed, without oil, on a mat or firm table, and involves the therapist actively moving the client's body — assisted stretches, joint mobilisation, and acupressure applied with hands, thumbs, forearms, elbows, and sometimes feet.

That last part surprises a lot of first-timers: in a traditional Thai massage, you're not a passive recipient the whole time. You'll be guided into yoga-like stretches the therapist supports and controls.

What it feels like: active vs. passive

Swedish massage feels relaxing throughout — it's built around a smooth, continuous sensation. Traditional Thai massage has more range: firm acupressure in one moment, a deep assisted stretch the next, then a lighter rhythmic compression. It's a more varied, sometimes more intense experience, and for many guests, a more complete one — improved flexibility and joint mobility alongside the muscle relief.

Which one should you book?

If you want to lie down, switch off, and feel pampered from start to finish, our Full Body Relaxing massage is the closer match. If you want real muscle and joint work — genuine flexibility gains, not just a nice hour — traditional Thai massage, or our Full Body Combination which blends both approaches, is the better call.

Not sure which describes what you actually want? Tell us when you book — every therapist here is trained in the full traditional technique and can adjust pressure and pacing to what you're actually after, not a fixed script.
